FlexPai: the world’s first folding smartphone

While Samsung and LG are just preparing to launch folding smartphones, the Chinese company is taking full orders for a flexible gadget. Samsung has never concealed its desire to be the first to release a smartphone with a flexible display. But it seems that they are ahead of her. And did this little-known Chinese company.

This week, Rouyu Technology unveiled the FlexPai in China. This, according to the manufacturer, the world’s first commercial folding smartphone. It is equipped with a flexible 7.8-inch AMOLED display produced by Rouyu with a resolution of 1920 × 1440 pixels and can be used as a tablet when unfolded. The smartphone is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 chip that has not yet been submitted, supplemented depending on version 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128, 256 or 512 GB of internal memory. He also received 16-and 20-megapixel camera, USB Type-C port, a slot for microSD memory cards and support for two SIM-cards, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS. But the 3.5-mm audio jack for headphones it does not.

Autonomous operation of the device is provided by a 3800 mAh rechargeable battery, which can be charged from 0 to 80% thanks to proprietary Ro-Charge technology in 60 minutes. The FlexPai is running under the Android 9.0 Pie operating system with the Water OS 1.0 shell, which adapts depending on the state of the device — the tablet mode is turned on unfolded, and when folded, the system switches to the interface for the smartphone.

Special attention deserves the folding design of the FlexPai. The case dimensions are 134×190.35×7.6 mm (in the unfolded state), and the weight is 320 g. In the folded state, the case thickness increases to 15.2 mm. The manufacturer guarantees that the flexible hinge is able to withstand over 200 thousand folding-unfolding cycles. This has been confirmed in laboratory studies and practical tests. Experts attending the presentation, including the well-known Ice universe insider, noted the rough design of FlexPai. Apparently, Rouyu Technology decided to neglect the beauty in order to become the first company that released a folding smartphone.
