The desire for framelessness in the smartphone industry is unlimited. Now on the market, there are such devices as iPhone X, Galaxy S9 and S9 +, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 and Mi Mix 2s, Essential Phone, OnePlus 6, LG G7 and many others who did what once seemed impossible: screen in relation to the body overcame the mark of 80%. However, the smartphone Vivo NEX, which broke all the patterns, demonstrated breakthrough technologies and a real “frameless”.
Presented initially as a concept at the MWC 2018, Vivo NEX caused such a positive impression that the manufacturer decided to release its commercial model.
Vivo NEX is, first of all, an innovative smartphone. The company Vivo for the first time in the world achieved a record 91.24% of the effective area of the screen. At the same time, the device has thin frames and a small “chin”. The 6.59-inch Ultra FullView display with Super AMOLED technology received FHD + resolution and a 19.3: 9 aspect ratio.
Such framelessness became possible due to the fact that the front camera module was hidden inside the smartphone. The camera is retractable, its mechanism automatically works when necessary. Conversation dynamics on the front panel, too, no, the sound during the call is transmitted through the display using the proprietary Screen SoundCasting technology. Most likely this is the same piezoelectric technology that Xiaomi used in its first Mi Mix.
So, What are the Specs?
Vivo NEX is equipped with a built-in screen fingerprint scanner, similar to what we saw earlier in the Vivo X20UD and X21, but only the third generation. The Chinese company was the first to introduce this innovation. At the moment, on-screen fingerprint sensors are already available in the Huawei P20 and Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The most interesting is that this scanner is equipped only with the Vivo NEX Ultimate version, while the base model received a traditional fingerprint scanner on the back of the case.
As for the hardware component, Vivo NEX, like any other flagship this year, is equipped with a Snapdragon 845 chipset (in the basic version of Snapdragon 710), 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal storage and a powerful battery with 4000 mAh. This is in the top configuration. There are also memory options for 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory. The dual main camera with optical stabilization is represented by a 12 Mpix primary module with an f / 1.8 diaphragm and an additional 5 Mp module with a depth sensor and an f / 2.4 aperture. Artificial intelligence is used to recognize the scene, apply filters, create composition and HDR mode. The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels.
Vivo NEX runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with the proprietary shell of Funtouch OS 4.0. The software includes a personal assistant Jovi own development. It can be run by a separate button that is on the side face. Jovi is used for launching applications, recognize voice commands and what is displayed on the screen (similar to Now On Tap from Google).
