Qualcomm: at least two flagships in 2019 will receive 5G support

Qualcomm and Ericsson recently made the first successful call on the 5G network. Now it’s up to smartphone makers. Not only mobile operators but also mobile device manufacturers are actively preparing for the launch of fifth-generation networks. The first 5G smartphones will hit the market next year. This is in the framework of the event 4G / 5G Summit confirmed by Qualcomm.

Speaking at the 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong, Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon (Cristiano R. Amon) said that at least two flagship 5G smartphones will be released next year. Moreover, one of them will be presented in the first half of the year. What these flagships will be, Cristiano Amon did not elaborate.

Qualcomm

Qualcomm has named the names of partners who will use the 5G-modem Snapdragon X50 next year. Among them – Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Sharp, Sony, as well as the Finnish company HMD Global, which produces smartphones under the Nokia brand. But Apple, Samsung, and Huawei are absent in the list of partners. Interestingly, both Huawei and Samsung plan to announce their first 5G smartphones next year. Moreover, Samsung is working on its own 5G-modem. As for Apple, then, as sources say, it does not want to hurry with the release of the fifth-generation iPhone.

In addition, Qualcomm announced a smaller version of the QTM052 mmWave module, which is 25% smaller than the chip released in July. This module will find its use in 5G-devices in 2019. It remains only to find out how this modem will be good in real life. The head of Qualcomm claims that with the Snapdragon X50, the smartphone will be able to work on 5G networks for a whole day without recharging.
