Qualcomm Introduced the First mmWave 5G Radios for Smartphones

The specifications of the new standard are finally approved, now it’s up to small – the development of hardware for the deployment of technology, in particular modems and antennas. Qualcomm has already succeeded and previously presented one of the first 5G-modems for smartphones. Today, July 23, the American manufacturer announced another breakthrough – the world’s first fully integrated antenna modules mmWave 5G, designed for mobile devices.

Since there are many complexities of technical and constructive design, it has until now been considered impossible to use signals from the millimeter wave spectrum in wireless mobile communications. Qualcomm managed to solve all the difficulties and develop a compact radio module QTM052, built into the chassis of the smartphone. The chip with the size of a 10-penny coin is equipped with a 5G NR transceiver, a power management chip, a phased array antenna and supports bandwidth up to 800 MHz in the frequency bands 26.5-29.5 GHz (n257), 27.5-28.35 GHz (n261) and 37-40 GHz (n260). According to the company, in conjunction with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem in one smartphone, you can install up to four antenna modules.

According to Qualcomm, the first mobile devices supporting high-speed wireless communication mmWave 5G may appear on the market in the next 2019. At present, the QTM052 antenna modules are at the stage of delivery to the manufacturers. In this case, the generation of 5G networks with gigabit speeds and minimum delay will debut faster than expected.
