The Release of OpenWrt 18.06 – the Operating System for Home Routers

This is the first major update with many new features since the OpenWrt and LEDE projects merged.

Developers of Linux-distribution OpenWrt released an update to their operating system with the index of 18.06, which adds many new features.

OpenWrt is designed for use in various network devices, such as routers and access points. It supports various platforms and architectures, which allows you to significantly expand the capabilities of network equipment.

The current update is very important, if only because it is the first release since the merger of the OpenWrt and LEDE projects earlier this year. The basis for the release is the repository LEDE – a branch from OpenWrt, created by a group of developers who disagreed with some of the solutions of the main project team OpenWrt. The main principles of LEDE are an open development process involving the community.

OpenWrt 18.06 contains a huge number of new features. With all of them you can see on the official website, we will highlight only the main ones:

  • Added patches to protect against Specter and Meltdown attacks;
  • Improved system update procedure;
  • The function of automatic configuration rollback is added when communication with network equipment is lost;
  • Upgrade to the Linux kernel 4.9.111 or 4.14.52 depending on the architecture of the chip on the devices;
  • Updated tulchein;
  • Fixed IPv6 and DHCPv6 errors;
  • Added support for multiple router models.

The developers also refused to support some platforms and drivers. Not without problems. Among them – the lack of 802.11ac 5 GHz on certain devices, a few minor errors in the web interface. In any case, it’s nice to see that the project continues to evolve, offering users alternative firmware for network devices.
